GEUS - Copenhaga (Donamarca)
Would you like to take on the responsibility of quantifying uncertainty in water balance for the HOBE catchment? The 3-year PhD study will contribute to quantifying the overall water balance and assessing the associated uncertainties by use of a hydrological model. The Department of Hydrology at GEUS has the position open from 1 November 2014.
GEUS is participating in The Danish Hydrological Observatory HOBE that was established in 2007 with an overall aim to quantify the various water balance elements for the Skjern River catchment (www.hobecenter.dk).
Job description
The PhD study will utilise an abundance of high quality data collected in a number of process studies together with a comprehensive, distributed physically-based catchment hydrological model covering groundwater, surface water and land surface-atmosphere water and energy balance.
The uncertainty of the results generated by a hydrological model is a combination of several uncertainty components including uncertainty on forcing data (e.g. precipitation, temperature and other climatic variables), calibration data (e.g. stream discharge, hydraulic head and soil moisture), conceptual model, and parameter values. A main research objective is to quantify these uncertainties using different theoretical methods.
Qualifications
We invite candidates from these scientific fields to apply: hydrology, hydrogeology, water resources engineering, and environmental sciences. The candidate should have a solid background in mathematical and statistical analysis, be familiar with numerical modelling of hydrological processes and handling of large data sets.
Furthermore, the candidate must have excellent interpersonal skills and be able to work in a team together with agronomists, geologists, geophysicists, and hydrologists. An interest in field work is desirable. Non-Danish applicants must be willing to attend Danish courses within the first year of employment
Department of Hydrology
Department of Hydrology is one of the three research departments at GEUS working with water. Our primary areas of activity are characterisation, quantification and modelling of the hydrological cycle including groundwater-surface water interaction, studies of flow and solute transport processes, climate change impacts and adaptation of water resources, assessment of uncertainty of monitoring and modelling, and integrated water resources management. Most of the department's activities are carried out in close cooperation with Danish as well as foreign research institutes and universities. The department also advises State and local authorities and private parties in Denmark.
We offer:
A creative interdisciplinary research environment
A dynamic and informal working environment with talented and dedicated colleagues
Possibility of additional courses and training as required; personal development
Family-friendly work place, centrally located in Copenhagen
Active staff and art clubs
Fitness centre with professional assistance located at the workplace
Employment and enrollment conditions
The successful candidates will be employed at the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland (GEUS), and enrolled in the PhD school of Science, University of Copenhagen. Professor Karsten Høgh Jensen, University of Copenhagen, will be the principal supervisor with Professor Torben O. Sonnenborg and Professor Jens Christian Refsgaard, GEUS, as co-supervisors.
Terms of salary and appointment will be according to agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations.
The Ministry of Climate, Energy and Building is an Equal Opportunity Employer.

Application
Formal applications marked "GEUS 031-00162" must be submitted to GEUS no later than 14th October 2014 at 12 midday (Danish time). Material received after this time will not be taken into account.
Applications should include a statement of research interests, a CV, bachelor and master's degree diploma or a preliminary approval of your master thesis, a list of publications and possibly names and contact information of max two references.
You can apply for the position by entering GEUS website http://www.geus.dk/geuspage-uk.htm under Jobs (Danish version http://www.geus.dk/ see Job og uddannelse).
Applications received after the deadline will not be taken into considerations.
The Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland (GEUS) is an internationally oriented, independent research institution within the Danish Ministry of Climate, Energy and Building, and is part of Geocenter Denmark. GEUS also acts as consultant to public authorities and individuals within nature, climate, the environment, energy and mineral resources. GEUS is responsible for the scientific exploration of the geology in Denmark and Greenland including shelf areas. GEUS maps, acquires and monitors data, informs the public about geological matters and is the national geological data centre.
